When a reseller sends units back that they never sold, those units return to the batch they left, not to your newest one.
If they named a batch, that is where it goes. If they did not, it goes back across the batches they are still holding, oldest first — so handing stock out and taking it back cancel out batch by batch, not just in your overall total.
Why it matters. Your total was always right either way. It is the split between batches that tells you what each order actually has left, which batch to sell from next, and which certificate covers the units in your hand.
⚠️ A batch can never show more units than it was bought with. If a count looks impossible — more at house than the order brought in — that is worth telling us about.
Not traced to a batch. Under Sources you may see a line reading *N not traced to a batch*. Those units are counted in your total; we simply cannot say which order they came from — usually stock recorded before you were tracking batches, or returned without one. Nothing is lost, and nothing is quietly added to a batch that could not hold it.
